Immaculate Heart of Mary Confirmation Program
201 Boulevard, Scarsdale, New York 10583

Dear Parents of 8th Grade Students,

This year will be very busy year for your 8th Grader !  Your child will be preparing for the Sacrament of Confirmation. When you registered for the IHM Religious Education Program for 2021-2022, your 8th Grade student was automatically registered to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in 2022.  If you have not done so already, please register at IHMRELED.ORG as soon as possible.

This letter will summarize Confirmation requirements. We will be using our new registration website to post the information and we will continue to use email and Flocknote communications to keep you up-to-date.  We hope this will help clarify what to expect and keep everyone organized and on track.

Before reviewing the list below, please note, we encourage your student to get a head start this summer on earning Service hours.

The following is a summary of requirements for Confirmation Candidates.  Links to forms and documents are included. All of this, and additional details, may be found on our new registration website - IHMRELED.ORG - under the menu item "Confirmation".

  1. Mandatory Parent & Candidate Meeting:

Typically we hold a Parent and Candidate Meeting in the early Fall to hand out a package of materials and review the requirements of the program. This year we have added all of the information that you will need to our website. Please let us know if you would prefer a folder of printed material, which you can pick up at the Religious Ed office.

  1. Mass Attendance

An important part of our faith and a responsibility of every practicing Catholic is attending Mass on Sundays and Holy Days. Confirmation students are required to attend Mass from October to May. The process for tracking Mass Attendance is handed out in class to all 8th Grade students.

  1. Confirmation Enrollment Agreement

Because of Covid, the November 10th Enrollment Ceremony has been canceled and the ceremony will be done during class time with the students only on October 25.  At that time, we will ask that both student and parent read and Sign the IHM Confirmation Enrollment Agreement and bring it with them to class. This is one way to show the parish, priests, and teachers that you are ready and willing to participate in activities that will help prepare for Confirmation.

  1. Community Service and Report Due on or before Jan 10, 2022

Students are required to complete a minimum of 25 hours of service of their choosing. Any volunteer work over the summer may be included. Students may perform services close to home: raking, shoveling, babysitting, making cards, etc. as  they are all wonderful services. More ideas can be found on the Confirmation Service page of this website.  All service must be done on a voluntary basis.  Students must keep track of the service projects and record them on the IHM Confirmation Service Form.

  1. Confirmation Family Retreat participation

We are planning a Family retreat for Candidates.  The date and time originally announced has been revised. The retreat will be held on Monday, November 15th during class time from 5:15-7:15.  The retreat will held only this date and is for students only. Sr. Ana Chiara and Sr. Marguerite Marie will be giving the retreat. Please remember, this is one of the Confirmation requirements. If your child does not attend, you will have to find another retreat in another parish to attend and most of them are usually during the school day.

  1. Saint Name Selection and Report - Due on or before Jan 10, 2022

Students will choose a Confirmation name as a sign of their growth in faith. The name must be the name of a Saint, or a variation of that name.  Students research and prepare a single page report on the Saint whose name they have chosen: detailing information on that Saint, explaining why they chose his/her name, and including how, by imitating the qualities of this Saint they can be a better Christian.  Please use the Saint Report Description to help you with this activity.

  1. Letter to Monsignor Sweeney - Due on or before Jan 10, 2022

Each Candidate is asked to type a letter to Monsignor Sweeney, stating their desire to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. The letter should include reasons why they would like to be confirmed, how they have prepared for the sacrament, why they feel they are ready, and how they will continue to carry out their faith and make it real and alive in the future.  Please follow the instructions in this document:  Candidate Letter to Monsignor Sweeney.

  1. Sponsor Selection and Certificate  - Due on or before Jan 10, 2022

Each student must choose a person to be his/her Sponsor according to the guidelines provided.  Please review the Sponsor Guidelines page on this website.  A Sponsor must complete an IHM Certificate of  Sponsorship and have it signed by a priest in the Sponsor's home parish.

  1. Confirmation Quizzes and Final Exam

In the Spring the students will be taking 3 written quizzes that will lead up to a final Confirmation Exam.  Between the studying they do at home, and the instruction given in class, they should be very well prepared.

  1. Confirmation Dress Guidelines.

In the Spring, parents will receive an email reminder of the Confirmation Dress Guidelines that are posted on this site.  You will also receive an online order form and be asked to provide a size for your Confirmation Gown. The cost of the gown was included in the Registration Fee.

  1.   Confirmation Day Schedule:

Confirmation has been scheduled for June 2, 2022 with Bishop James Massa. We will keep you up-to-date via email on the Confirmation Rehearsal and Ceremony schedules. We also now have an online calendar for the Religious Ed. Program Schedule.
